Program Goals
To provide:
- Immediate response and emotional support to children and their caretakers
- The opportunity for children to talk and express their feelings
- Safety planning
- Referrals for counseling and other support services
- Help to parents in accessing ongoing health care
- Links to court advocates and community agencies around issues of domestic violence.
MGH PACT clinicians and Chelsea Police Departments first provide physical safety, then clinical time and materials that empower children by allowing them the opportunity to express themselves relative to the traumatic experiences. The goal is to reduce the short-term effects of trauma through immediate intervention, and ultimately to reduce the effects of trauma on a child's ongoing development. A longer-term goal is the hope of interrupting the cycle of family and community violence. Clinicians provide language appropriate tools to parents such as the Pediatric Symptom Checklist, as well as other printed materials on behavioral and psychological issues which may be of interest to the parent. Clinicians teach parents about the effects on children of witnessing violence, and offer assistance to them in managing the aftermath of such incidents. They connect children and families with medical care, psychiatric care, and other community services, and intervene when necessary with child protection agencies.
Program Overview
The Police Action Counseling Team (PACT) is a partnership between the MGH-Chelsea HealthCare Center and the Chelsea Police Department to provide crisis intervention to children who have witnessed trauma and/or violence. MGH mental health professionals are available to accompany officers in police cruisers during one shift per week. They are also available by beeper 24 hours per day, seven days per week all year round for on scene response to 911 calls where children are present.
