WebsiteProgram GoalThe mission of Madison Youth Services (MYS) is to foster the healthy development of the children of Madison and their families through progressive programs that offer prevention, community coordination and treatment services. As part of this mission, Child Development-Community Policing clinicians serve victims and witnesses of violent or traumatic events. Program OverviewThe Madison CDCP team includes 4 clinicians based at Madison Youth Services and at least three police supervisors who have been trained in the CDCP model. The Madison Police Department has 18 patrol officers and 3 detectives. Police identify most CDCP cases in the course of routine activity, or when responding to a 911 call where it is evident that children have been exposed to violence. When an officer responds to a case where children have been exposed to violence s/he consults with a supervisor, who then indicates whether a referral should be made to CDCP. Once the family has consented, the officer will contact the clinician on call by cell phone, or by calling MYS directly during business hours. The clinician and the officer will briefly discuss the case and decide whether the clinician is needed at the scene. In some acute cases, the clinician may be called to the scene prior to the family’s consenting. Action plans are developed for all newly referred cases, with clinical and police follow-up responsibilities delineated. MYS provides information and referral services to clients as necessary, and coordinates services where appropriate. In general, if the client/family has services in place, MYS does not pursue engaging the family in CDCP activities. CDCP clinicians at MYS provide acute response services as needed, and occasionally conduct follow up visits with police officers. MYS does regularly conduct home visits, and CDCP clinicians occasionally accompany officers to family homes to engage families in services. Staff
