Project Purpose:

The Safe Start project establishes a community planning process to address children's exposure to violence in Spokane, Washington. The purpose of the planning process is to develop a continuum of care plan for the community that integrates social services, criminal justice, and prevention efforts. Family risks to be addressed include children in Spokane County who are exposed to:

  • Child abuse
  • Neglect
  • Criminal behavior in parents
  • Domestic violence

Based on identified areas of critical need in Spokane, all tasks will be organized to address:

  • Increased communication across agencies
  • Improved identification and referral of at-risk families
  • The integration of services based on individualized care principles

Strategic Planning work groups will be organized around goals defining the overall Spokane Safe Start Initiative. The work groups will be integrated through a Coordinating Committee.
