Announcement

For Immediate Release: August 25, 2006

Grand Opening of the Sitka Family Justice Center on August 25, 2006.

The Sitka Tribe of Alaska was the only tribe in the country to receive this grant and we are very excited about this opportunity to assist our tribal citizens and Sitka citizens who are victims of domestic violence and their children. We all know that Alaska has one of the highest rates of domestic violence in the country and that Alaska Native women, in particular, are victims at an alarming rate.

The Sitka Family Justice Center is modeled after the San Diego Justice Center and currently includes the following on-site partners: 1) Sitka Tribe of Alaska, Intake Specialist and Director 2) Alaska Network on Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault, Attorney 3) Sitka Police Department, Domestic Violence Unit, Detective and Victim’s Services Coordinator 4) Sitka Tribe of Alaska, Children’s Trauma Program 5) Sitkans Against Family Violence, Advocate. As you can see, rather than having to travel from office to office a woman can come to the center and have access to many of the services she needs and on-site advocacy.
