National Center Staff to Consult in New Mexico

NEW HAVEN, CT - Dr. Steven Marans, Director of the National Center for Children Exposed to Violence (NCCEV) at the Yale Child Study Center and Dr. James Lewis, III, Chief of Operations for the NCCEV will provide consultation in the Child Development-Community Policing Program (CD-CP) model for Safe Start Initiative participants in Zuni, NM, December 6-8, 2004.

Representatives from Zuni, NM, a Safe Start Initiative site, received training in the CD-CP Program model in New Haven, CT, in September 2004. The New Haven training and the consultation in New Mexico are critical components of the implementation of the CD-CP Program model.

It is the pioneering work of the Child Development-Community Policing Program, a ground-breaking community collaboration among law enforcement, juvenile justice, domestic violence, medical and mental health professionals, school personnel and others, that led to the creation of the NCCEV by the White House and U.S. Department of Justice in 1999.

The mission of the NCCEV is to increase the capacity of individuals and communities to reduce the incidence and impact of violence on children and families; to train and support the professionals who provide intervention and treatment to children and families affected by violence; and, to increase professional and public awareness of the effects of violence on children, families, communities and society.

“We are very much looking forward to the next steps in the development of collaborative responses to children and families affected by violence in the Zuni nation. Our colleagues in New Mexico bring new dimensions to the CD-CP model and new opportunities to learn how to best serve those who need support,” said Dr. Marans.
