Child and Family Traumatic
Stress Study

Position Title: Research Intern (unpaid)
Position Start Date: Summer and Fall semester internships
are available. Summer interns must start by the end of May and Fall
interns by September.
Job Responsibilities: Interns participate in all aspects
of the research study including: participant screening and recruitment,
interviewing children and parents for the study using a standardized
interview protocol, scoring of measures, and data management/entry.
Interns will complete several on-line training courses in human subjects
research and handling of protected health information required by Yale
University School of Medicine in order to work with the research team
**More advanced students may be involved in data analysis and writing
of research results**
Objectives of the Program: The Child and Family Traumatic
Stress Study is a longitudinal research study designed to evaluate the
effectiveness of an innovative intervention for families implemented
in the weeks immediately following a traumatic event (e.g. motor vehicle
accident, sexual assault, domestic violence, community violence, etc.).
Interns who participate in our program will gain valuable research and
clinical experience working with an established research team. Interns
will leave the program with a grasp of the following:
1. Regulations and ethical issues in human subjects
research
2. Recruitment and consent procedures for participation
in a research study
3. Knowledge of some measures and interview strategies
to assess symptoms and trauma histories of children and adolescents
4. Skills in interviewing parents and children using
structured interview techniques
5. Understanding of child protective services reporting
laws
6. Use of SPSS to maintain research databases and run
statistical analyses
7. Use of Microsoft Access
***More advanced students with greater data skills may be involved in
data analysis and writing of research findings for publication from
archived data***
Hours: Interns are required to commit a minimum of
10 hours per week. These hours must include one late afternoon/evening
shift (e.g. 3:00-7:00PM) per week. In addition, a mandatory research
team meeting is held each Friday from 10:00-11:00AM. Other hours are
arranged with the supervisor.
Qualifications: Undergraduate juniors and seniors
or graduate level students only will be considered. Interns should have
a basic working knowledge of SPSS and have had a research methods course.
Additionally, previous experience working with children is desired.
